Abstract

Freshwater fish play a crucial role in aquatic ecosystems by contributing to food web dynamics, nutrient cycling, and ecosystem stability. Their foraging behaviour and habitat selection are essential ecological processes that influence growth, survival, reproduction, and species interactions. the factors affecting foraging behaviour and habitat selection in freshwater fish species, with particular emphasis on environmental conditions, food availability, predator presence, and habitat characteristics. Freshwater fish exhibit diverse feeding strategies, including herbivory, carnivory, omnivory, and detritivory, which enable them to utilize available resources efficiently. Habitat selection is influenced by factors such as water depth, temperature, dissolved oxygen levels, vegetation cover, substrate composition, and flow patterns. Fish often adjust their foraging activities and habitat preferences in response to seasonal changes, competition, and environmental disturbances. Human activities, including pollution, habitat modification, dam construction, and climate change, can significantly alter natural habitats and affect fish behaviour and distribution. Understanding the relationship between foraging behaviour and habitat selection is important for conserving freshwater biodiversity, managing fisheries resources, and maintaining ecosystem health. the adaptive strategies employed by freshwater fish to maximize resource utilization while minimizing risks from predators and environmental stressors. The findings contribute to a broader understanding of fish ecology and provide valuable insights for sustainable freshwater ecosystem management and conservation planning.
